How to Decide What to Write For Your Business

When you’re writing for your business, how do you decide WHAT to write?

There are so many moving parts these days that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.  Maybe you need to update your website copy, but then you go to a marketing webinar and suddenly you feel like you need to get on top of your social media presence.  Then someone else mentions how they’re selling their services online with a sales funnel that includes a lead magnet, email sequences, a sales page, and more!

Whoa.

How do you decide?  How do you focus?

Here’s what I recommend:

Get clear on where you want to go in your business.

No one (except maybe me and a handful of other people) wants to be writing just for writing’s sake.  When it comes to your business, it’s important to be clear on the direction your marketing is going.  Rather than doing ALL the things and being spread too thin, it’s important to select the things that will move you forward to where you want to be.

Recently, I was in a coaching program for freelance writers like myself.  We had a session on goals and that’s where I learned about something called the North Star Goal.  Simply put, you choose the one overarching goal that you’re working on. A big, lofty goal that keeps you movin’ on up.

So let’s say it’s a financial target that you’re working toward for the month.  If you remain focused on that goal, you can ask yourself the following for anything you work on in your business: “Will this move me toward my North Star Goal?”

Use this method to begin choosing your marketing techniques.

Choose ONE thing to focus on.

Now that you’ve gotten clear on where you want to go, it’s time to choose ONE item that can help move you forward.  If you need 3 new clients that will pay you $1,500 each to reach your goal of $4,500 for the month then it’s probably not a good idea to start a blog today.  That may fit into part of your long-term goals, but for now, what ONE thing can you write to try to get those three clients?

Maybe it’s an email pitch template that you send to corporate offices or apartment complexes.  Maybe it’s a follow-up email to leads who were interested in your services.  Or even a quick check-in with past clients who may need you again.  Choose something that 1) you will follow through on and 2) moves you closer to your North Star Goal.

So what’s the one thing you’re going to write this week? Let me know in the comments!
